A Continuum?

Commitments are bound to fail.

Why do I say that? And what sort of commitments am I talking about? What do I mean?

We set up ourselves to fail when we make a commitment of ourselves. If I commit to doing good, or just not even doing one bad thing – lets say coveting – I will fail. I will come back with a report of not doing all the good I needed to do, or I would fail in my commitment to not coveting.

Am I being hopeless in my thinking? I think I’m being real and honest.

Why? Because a commitment made in the flesh will fail. If I commit to not sinning, or to doing good on my own, then where is God? We cannot defeat sin without His strength, and that strength comes through Christ and not ourselves. And that is the whole point – it’s coming from us instead of the strength of Christ. If how you define a commitment is through Christ, then keep that ‘commitment.’

Let me put this in better terms – surrender. When I commit to not coveting, I place it at the alter with good intentions, but in my heart I tie a string to it so that when I leave the alter I drag what I ‘left’ there right back along with me just to mess up again. Surrendering is cutting the string.

Surrender leaves it to Christ, and allows us to give Him our burdens for Him to take. It trusts in Him, He has the outcome in His hands and what have we to worry? When we surrender, we leave it to His grace. It is only by His grace that we can overcome sin, not us.

And surrender doesn’t just mean with sin, it means with all of our worries. We can leave a burden that has been bothering us for years and still have that string tied to our belt loop because of our insecurity with what will happen when we let it go. Cut the string, it’s in His hands. He loves you, and who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? He is in control and has you in His hands. You think that the Man who overcame the grave cannot know what is best for you in what you’re dealing with? Surrender your burdens and whatever is bothering you to Him. Take the yoke with Him, His burden is light. Oh, and stop tying things to the yoke!

Stephen Curtis Chapman – My Surrender

Does it all sound the same?
Are my words getting through?
I’ve been trying so hard
That I’m about to break

So here I am with all I have

And I’m giving it all back to You
All back to You, I surrender
Yeah, I’m giving it all back to You
All back to You, this is my surrender
Take it all

And what song can I sing
But the song that You give?
I have nothing to bring
That did not come from Your hands

So here I am with all I have

And I’m giving it all back to You
All back to You, I surrender
Yeah, I’m giving it all back to You
All back to You, this is my surrender

All my prayers and all my dreams
I’m giving it all to You
I lay it all down at Your feet, I’m Yours
So what song can I sing but this song?

I’m giving it all back to You
All back to You, I surrender
I’m giving it all back to You
All back to You, this is my surrender
Take it all, take it all, Lord, take it all, take it all
