Call to Arms

As a Christian man, keeping your eyes, thoughts, and actions pure is an incredible challenge. We face an insurmountable weight of temptation that is everywhere we turn. Most everything, especially in advertising, in our culture is somehow inherently tied to sexuality in some form by someone. It’s rare to find anything that is not perverted in some way. On top of this, we have our natural drive that is God has designed us with. Even more, we have Satan and his demons whispering into our ears, “You can keep looking” or “no one will know” or something of the like.

As a Christian man trying to live a pure life, this weight can be overwhelming, especially when we make mistakes. Satan whispers that we are worthless, and can’t amount to any kind of leader that a wife or family would want or need. We’ve felt like a lost cause and hopeless many times. Why would the godly woman we dream of want someone as decrepit as us? How can she see any value in him? Then it transitions from here. How can God want us or see any value in us? We know our wives wouldn’t, why should He?. How can He want people like us in a leadership positions?

From there it keeps spiraling down in a cycle of self defeat. We listen to Satan’s lies, believing we are hopeless cases destined for loneliness and worthlessness. No one would want us in any kind of leadership, because we can’t live our lives straight. Our dreams become distorted and broken. Our dreams of some form of ministry look utterly bleak.

I’ve been in this place, many times. Too many. I’m too prone to listen to Satan’s lies and not realize and accept what God has offered everyone, not just men. That is His love and grace that extends beyond our comprehension. That spiral down could be cut before it extends beyond a mere line if we acted on this knowledge. Some of us know this too well, because if we had it wouldn’t have destroyed our relationships or made us fearful of getting into one because we are afraid of what is inside us and our sin that lurks in the shadows.

What lurks in the shadows had to be fought in the light.

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
~1 John 1:7

We have to be diligent in reminding ourselves of who we are as children of God. When we start spiraling down, we cease to be living under the realization of our identity. We seem to forget the grace and love of God that were so important and real to us in times past. It seems so foreign and unreal to us that God could love us and have so much compassion on His children that mess up. We need to remind ourselves of our identity in Christ. Here is a link that gives you a reference point to begin to do this:

Another thing we have to do intertwined with realizing our identity in Christ is realizing the character of God. We have to learn who He is, how He loves us, and of the sacrifice of His Son for our sin. We learn of His grace and mercy, how He has good in store for those that love Him, and of all of His magnificent promises He has given us so no matter where we are in life we can put our hope in Christ. His unfailing love for us never ends, and we have to be willing to fight to keep our eyes set on Him.

We also have to as men be willing to fight. We have to be willing to fight for the love that we have deep down for God, for our purity, for our minds and actions, and for those that we love. We have to be like David’s mighty men fighting and finishing with our hands clinging to the Sword. Even if we come back beaten and bloodied, it will be after we’ve been knocked down and even out, but getting back up and fighting every time. We know Who we fight for, and that He can give us strength beyond measure in our weakness.

We have to fight for control over our minds and eyes, turning away from what will tempt us instead of constantly remaining around that cause us to sway until we inevitably give in. Like good soldiers, we have to discipline ourselves and train for the battles that we will face. Sometimes those battles and the training for them are rather difficult, and sometimes there are times of peace but the training we go through has to remain constant as if we were going to war. We are called to arms, fighting for our purity as the Bride of Christ. Swinging the sword of truth, we will cut Satan’s lies from our lives and live out the truth of who we really are in Christ and call others to join our fight.

And I will be the lighthouse in your sea
That’s guiding you home
And I will be the lamp unto your feet
When you roam

Just cling to Me
And I’ll set you free

I will be the light
When the world is blinding out your sight
I will be the light
When it’s all getting blurry and covering up your eyes
I will be the light
I will be the light

I will be the sun up in your sky
That’s keeping you alive
I will be the headlights in your night
When you drive

Just cling to Me
And I’ll set you free

I will be the light
When the world is blinding out your sight
I will be the light
When it’s all getting blurry and covering up your eyes
I will be the light

I will be the light in your night
When you lose your way, you lose your sight
I will be the light in your night
When you don’t know which way to go
I will be the light in your night
When you lose your way, you lose your sight, oh

I will be the light
When the world is blinding out your sight
I will be the light
When it’s all getting blurry and covering up your eyes

And I will be the light
And I will be the light
And I will be the light
When the world is blinding out your eyes
I will be the light
